A poet, critic and detective storywriter, writing as Nicholas Blake. Day-Lewis made his name with 'Transitional Poems' in 1929 and during the 1930s became associated with Auden and Spender in left-wing causes. During the Second World War, he worked for the Ministry of Information. He became Professor of Poetry at Oxford from 1951 to 1956 and was appointed Poet Laureate in 1968.
