This is a view of the beach at Seaton Carew near Hartlepool where the artist was born. She was painting there when a coach arrived and the people poured onto the beach. They were from the mining towns of County Durham and dressed in their Sunday best clothes. The dark figures standing in groups or striding out across the pale yellow sands convey the excitement and freedom of the seaside.
