on the front of the pedestal: THE BURGHERS OF CALAIS / BY AUGUSTE RODIN; on the back of the pedestal: PRESENTED TO THE NATION BY THE / .NATIONAL ART COLLECTIONS FUND 1914; on a bronze plaque on the back of the pedestal: THE CONSERVATION OF / RODIN’S THE BURGHERS OF CALAIS / AND THE NEW PLINTH / WERE FUNDED BY NICHOLAS GOODISON / (CHAIRMAN, NATIONAL ART COLLECTIONS FUND 1986–2002) AND JUDITH GOODISON, IN 2004; on a slate slab inserted into the paving in front of the group: These figures known as / THE BURGHERS OF CALAIS / commemorate the six citizens of that town / who offered themselves / as hostages to Edward III, after he had vainly besieged their town, for nearly a year in 1347: / the story goes that their lives were spared / on the intercession of Edward’s queen / Philippa of Hainault
