Working to the theme of 'Party Conference Resorts', Andrew Macara was commissioned by the House of Commons to paint six of the well-known seaside resorts around the country's coastline where the conferences are held; the other subjects are Blackpool, Torquay, Bournemouth, Llandudno and Scarborough. In the commission, although the artist was given free rein he was asked to include a well-known building or landmark in each canvas so as to identify each resort, the pier being chosen to represent Brighton. Largely self taught, Andrew Macara studied briefly at the St Ives School of painting and has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and with the Royal Society of British Artists.
