Music Director of the Royal Opera House, London for fifteen years until 2002 and prior to that Music Director at Glyndebourne. His career as an orchestral conductor is equally distinguished and includes Chief Conductor of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam from 1964 until 1988, Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic from 1967 until 1979. His recordings of the symphonies of Mahler, Bruckner and Beethoven, among his favourite composers, are regarded as some of the best ever made. Haitink has been praised as a conductor under whom 'the strings rediscovered their bloom, the woodwind their articulacy, the brass their attack and the whole orchestra its concentration and commitment'. Michael Reynolds made three visits to the conductor's home in Lucerne, Switzerland where this portrait was produced entirely from life.
