The backrest of this simple garden bench holds a central panel decorated with the stylised, muscular figure of a rearing centaur. Unusually, the centaur is depicted with hooved arms that are raised before its face. The rearing movement is emphasised by a circular border of curving branch forms, which create a swirling energy. The arms of the bench are in the form of ridged scrolls treated in a stylised fashion. The bench was previously in the Wettern Tree Garden, designed and laid out in 1919 by Eric Frank Wettern, which contained a unique collection of trees and shrubs. Wettern and his brothers were successful importers, and later builders’ merchants, as well as makers of products in cement produced by the company Mono Concrete.
