Vettriano left school at 16 to become a mining engineer in the local coalfields at Methil. The gift of a set of watercolour paints for his 21st birthday inspired his love of painting. Almost entirely self-taught, Vettriano first attracted attention when he showed two works at the Royal Scottish Academy annual exhibition which both sold on the first day. A series of solo exhibitions has followed. As with this work, his paintings depicting groups of figures often have a sense of stillness and unease leaving the precise message of the work open to the viewers own interpretation.
