Three-quarter length portrait of an unidentified woman at the opera, seated in a theatre box with her head turned towards the stage to the left, a pair of opera glasses resting on the ledge before her. The auditorium can just be glimpsed behind the heavy curtain draped across the box. The woman is dressed in black with a heavy black lace shawl about her shoulders and head, a pair of pale gloves with black embroidered and lace details on her hands, which rest on her heart. A discarded programme lies in her lap.
