Lake was born in Southampton in 1569. He was Archdeacon of Surrey, Dean of Worcester and Warden of New College, Oxford. While Vice Chancellor of New College he was promoted to Bishop of Bath and Wells. He was liberal, diligent in preaching and he visited his clergy and maintained ecclesiastical discipline. Offenders had to perform penance and listen while he preached about repentance, after which he would invite them to dine with him at the Palace and dismess them with his blessing. He died in 1626 and was buried in the south aisle of the Cathedral. At the Coronation of King Charles I, he was selected to walk by the side of the King.
