Marachkin was born in Vitebsk, the same town as Marc Chagall. He trained at the Belarusian Academy of Arts in Minsk and is a member of the Belarusian Union of Artists. With his father, renowned Belarusian artist Alexei Marachkin, he is at the forefront of contemporary Belarusian art following the ideas, methods and traditions that were laid down by Marc Chagall, Kazimir Malevich and Vasily Kandinsky. Winter lasts three months in Belarus. Snow banks and deep frosts are quite common in this part of the world. This triptych is inspired by the moment when everything is waiting for the spring sun to shine. The format is reminiscent of the Belarusian traditional towels made from natural flax which are used to decorate the interiors of ordinary village huts.
