'Ann', 2022 is one of a series of new paintings by internationally acclaimed Jamaican-British artist Eugene Palmer. Based on a photograph taken at a family wedding, this larger than life portrait represents the artist’s sister. Ann is sitting on a foldaway chair, implying an informal, contemporary setting but Palmer also references traditions of formal Georgian portraiture and comments on eighteenth century society. The fine lace of Ann’s sky-blue dress would once only be afforded by rich landowners whose wealth was linked to colonialism and empire.
