Little is known about Katherine Watt, other than that she lived in Argyll Cottage, Clackmannan and was known locally, which is no doubt how she was given the commission to paint this portrait, presented to the sitter on his retiral from Paton's and Baldwin's wool-spinning mills in 1949, having spent his entire working life there. Alexander Forrester-Paton (1880–1954) was a great-grandson of John Paton, founder of the company. By the late nineteenth century the various branches of the family had become very wealthy: his parents built Inglewood, a mansion on the edge of Alloa and, in 1912, Gean House, a fine 'Jacobethan' house, as a wedding present for him and his new bride. Katherine Watt also painted pastoral scenes.
