This painting of Mr Alderman W. Gradwell, 5th Mayor of Barrow-in-Furness (1881–1882) was presented by his son, Mr Alderman W. Gradwell on 24th December 1909. William Gradwell was born at Lowick in the Lake District and learned his trade as a carpenter and wheelwright at Oxen Park. In 1844, aged 24, he set up business at Roose, at first to help build the Furness Railway, eventually becoming a builder, brickmaker and timber exporter.
