Epstein began this bust when Einstein was staying in a refugee camp in Britain after fleeing Germany in 1933. Epstein was delighted by the famous physicist's glance, which he later described as combining 'the humane, the humorous, and the profound'. He resembled the ageing Rembrandt. Einstein moved to take up a professorship at Princeton before the bust was completed.
