The sitter, Adam Cruickshan, was born at Ardinn near Turriff in 1787 and died at Mains of Gamrie, Banff in 1874. The portrait was painted in 1861 when he was 74 years old.

Adam Cruickshank was the grandfather of George Morrison Cruickshank, who was a previous provost of Turriff.
