Virtue was born in Accrington in1947 and studied at Accrington Art School and the Slade School of Art in London. He returned to live in Green Haworth in 1971 and began a period of incessant study of the nearby landscape through hundreds of paintings and drawings. The resulting grid-like, semi-abstract paintings brought him great success in the 1980s and he is now an internationally-renowned landscape painter. He moved to rural Devon in 1988, and was Associate Artist at the National Gallery in London in 2005, where he produced a series of enormous, critically acclaimed cityscapes. He works entirely in black and white.
