Abraham was visited by three angels, who prophesied that his wife would bear a son (Genesis 18: 2). This painting is the 'modello' for one of a set of six prints of Old Testament subjects engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi after Amigoni and published by Giuseppe Wagner in 1758. As with three other extant 'modelli' (Graphische Sammlung, Munich), it is painted on the back of a print by Wagner after Amigoni. The artist prepared the oil sketches before his departure from Venice for Madrid in 1747.
