Head carvings inset into stone alcoves on each face of the Gateway. The carvings feature portraits of: Henry I, Founder of the Abbey; Queen Matilda; a Knight Templar with chain armour; a pilgrim with scallop shell; the Virgin Mary; Christ; St John the Evangelist; a Benedictine Monk with cowl; a Mitred Abbot; a Nun and, a Man of Law. There are also several unnamed portraits, some of which are badly damaged.
