Still life painting had always been a central feature of Peploe’s work and, over the course of the 1920s, he spent much time attempting to perfect his responses to the patterns and relationships created by his studio arrangements. By the time that the present picture was painted, instead of creating the sense of movement which often features in his still-lifes of the period of the First World War, Peploe was making the picture planes flatter and enlivening them with the abstract patterns of drapery and of bowls of fruit, punctuated, as here, by a vase, almost invariably filled with roses or tulips.
