Richard Harry Carter was born in Truro and became one of the buyers in Cornwall of copper for the smelting firm of Vivian & Sons, Swansea. His spare time was spent sketching around Cornwall. After a number of years, he relinquished his business appointment and devoted himself entirely to his painting. This painting shows four women in a boat named Trondra, which is the name of a small inhabited island in Shetland, since the 1970s connected to the Shetland mainland by a bridge. The boat is a fourareen, or four-oared boat used for inshore travel in Shetland. The view is looking SSE, with the setting sun behind and moon rising above the hills in the distance, possibly in early autumn. It may have been painted near the croft of Burland on Trondra, which is still occupied.
