The artist gave this and two other pigeon paintings to the Gallery in memory of his wife. She came from Durham and that is where Malthouse began researching pigeons and pigeon fanciers amongst the mining community. His pigeon paintings date from the early 1950s. Malthouse writes of these three paintings:

‘the colours were refined in the endeavour to give a feeling of airborn flight. Light and shade tended to be replaced in the structure of the painting by the three-dimensional use of colour.'
