This painting depicts the Dutch fleet, under the command of Van Wassenaer, lying in anchor in readiness for war with England. This work was originally attributed to van de Velde the Elder, but since 1990 has been credited to his son. The van de Veldes would often work together – the Elder usually producing sketches which the Younger would use to produce paintings. Their works became famous for their intricate and detailed illustration of sails and rigging. Fleeing the French invasion of the Netherlands, the van de Veldes moved to England in 1672. Sea-pieces were popular in England during this period, and van de Velde the Younger painted for both Charles II and James II, both of whom were keen yachtsmen. The Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665–1667) was the result of an escalation of tensions between Britain and the Netherlands concerning trade routes.
