A hand coloured mezzotint of a view of York from 1858. This detailed view captures the walled city as well as the outskirts as they would have looked in the mid 19th century. The train station is in its original position (prior to its move outside of the walls in the 1880s). Ouse Bridge and Scarborough Rail Bridge are the only two ways to cross the river unless you use one of the two river ferries. Most of the foreground is taken up with the Bar Convent and its gardens, whilst the background is dominated by York Minster and the medieval city.
