Abstract and Op-Artist involved in kinetics, and teacher, born in Cardiff. Steele’s mathematical skills and interest in Cartesian philosophy led him to explore systematic forms of art, initially black and white, from the 1970s using colour. Steele attended Cardiff College of Art, 1948–50; Newport College of Art, 1950–2; also studying at École des Beaux-Arts in 1959–60. Steele held a number of teaching positions includ- ing Newport College of Art, Portsmouth College of Art and Portsmouth Polytechnic, and was visiting artist at Sheffield University in 1967. Participated in numerous group shows including Young Contemporaries, John Moores Exhibition in Liverpool, Carnegie International in Pittsburgh, Systems exhibition at Whitechapel Art Gallery and touring, and with CASW, SEA and SWG.
