(bapt. Antwerp, 23 July 1614; d Hoboken [now a district of Antwerp], 25 July 1652). Flemish marine painter. He was virtually the only noteworthy Flemish practitioner in the genre, seascapes being much more a Dutch speciality. He is best known for depictions of storms and shipwrecks, but he also produced various other types of marine pictures, including imaginary Mediterranean port scenes. Several other members of the family were artists, including his sister Catharina (1615–76), a seascape and still-life painter, but Clara Peeters (?1594–?1657), an outstanding (albeit obscure) Antwerp still-life painter, was no relation.
