Painter, draughtsman and teacher, born in Latvia, who settled in Yorkshire as a political refugee in 1947. For many years he was an agricultural and textile worker, attending evening classes at Bradford College of Art. In the early 1960s Mierins studied at Leeds College of Art and Goldsmiths’ College, then started teaching at Leeds College of Art & Design in 1966, retiring in the mid-1990s. In 1995 there was a retrospective at State Art Museum in Riga, which was also featured at Cartwright Hall in Bradford and at Barbican Centre. Mierins was there shown to be a powerful figure draughtsman and abstract painter. Bold colours, jostling shapes and intersecting forms were features of his work. Lived in Shipley.
