Artist and architect, born in Heaton Mersey, Cheshire. He was mostly self-taught, although spent a short period with Terry McGlynn at Stockport. Mayer latterly concentrated on watercolour, having between 1950–70 also painted in oil and acrylic. Mayer qualified as an architect, taking his finals in Edinburgh in 1944, and was still practising in his eighties. He was a fellow of RIBA. Mayer showed landscapes, some semi-abstract, in group exhibitions at National Theatre, Chenil Gallery, John Moores Liverpool Exhibition and elsewhere. Had many solo shows, including public galleries in Lancaster and Salford, Vernon Gallery in Preston, Theatre in the Forest at Grizedale and Crane Gallery in Manchester. Manchester City Art Gallery and Salford Art Gallery hold works.
