Painter, teacher and curator, born in St Andrews, Fife, who studied art history at the University of Manchester. He taught it in Leeds in the 1970s and between 1981–92 had curatorial responsibility for National Trust houses in East Anglia, where he settled at Aylsham, Norfolk, later in Ely, Cambridgeshire. Between 1988–92 Maddison studied with Dick Lee, other influences being Chardin and Sickert. Maddison’s rich, intimate work was in the Camden Town Group tradition in the interiors, his still life pictures bearing comparison with those of William Nicholson in their subtle placing and handling of paint. From 1992, when he began painting full-time, Maddison showed at the RA Summer Exhibition; in 1995 The National Trust commissioned panels from him for Felbrigg Hall; and there was a solo show at The Jerram Gallery, Salisbury, in 1998, others following at The Wykeham Gallery, Stockbridge, with one at Chappel Galleries, Chappel, in 2006.
