Artist in oil, pastel, watercolour, pen and ink. Born in London, he studied art at Hornsey School of Art and London University. Johnston became a noted art instructor, teaching at summer schools as well as writing a number of books for beginners in sketching and painting. In the 1970s he edited Leisure Painter for several years. As well as one-man exhibitions, he showed at the RBA, RI, ROI, NS and at the Paris Salon. His work is in private collections throughout the world. Lived in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire.
