Mixed-media artist and teacher, born in Uddingston, Lanarkshire. He studied at Glasgow School of Art, 1941–2 and 1946–9, teachers including Stanley Spencer, Benno Schotz, Hugh Adam Crawford and David Donaldson. In 1942 Hutcheson joined the Royal Air Force and began pilot training, which took him to Canada and America. “I always found time to attend some art school. In this way I studied at the Slade and Chester, Exeter and Liverpool Schools of Art, also a series of art institutions in Toronto, Detroit and New York.” In New York he “met most of the New York School and visited Peggy Guggenheim’s Gallery”, experiences which “were mind-blowing – in scale alone they were twenty to thirty times as big as anything I had ever painted…vigorous, slashing abstractions”.
