
Artist in oil, pastel and watercolour, born in Bristol, who supported herself working part-time for local government social services. She studied at Goldsmiths’ College School of Art, 1972–6, with Peter Cresswell, Albert Irvin and John Bellany, then at Royal College of Art with Ken Kiff, Andrew Brighton and Peter Allen. Giles’ work was featured in a number of books on landscape painting. Her work was notable for its careful organisation and an absence of people, sometimes creating a slightly Surrealist atmosphere. Group shows included Subjective City, Cleveland Gallery, Middlesbrough, and tour, 1990. She was in Two London Painters, at Swiss Cottage Library, 1983. Solo shows included Dungeness Paintings, Rye Art Gallery, 1992, and Deserted Landscape, at Barbican Centre, 1994.
