Painter, draughtsman, creator of constructions in a variety of materials, and teacher, born in Leeds, Yorkshire. Chilton’s output embraced a wide span in the belief that “a person has many facets, and you would be extremely dull if you only ever saw the world in one way”. However, a selection of elements from nature was a key feature of his output, drawing on the landscape. He studied at Leeds College of Art, 1952–6, under Harry Thubron, gained a travel scholarship to Spain in 1956, from 1956–9 studied painting and lithography at Slade School of Fine Art, in 1959 gaining an Abbey Minor Travel Scholarship. Chilton joined Leicester College of Art, 1960–4, being a visiting lecturer at Nottingham and Coventry Colleges of Art in 1963–4, then was a senior lecturer at Hull College of Art, 1965–73.
