Painter and teacher, born in York, who earned her national diploma in painting at Leeds College of Art, 1960–4, teachers including Harry Thubron and Tommy Watt, then gained her teacher’s certificate at Goldsmiths’ College of Art, 1965. For some years after leaving college Cain taught textile design and printmaking, lecturing part-time at many colleges including Canterbury, Colchester Technical, Jacob Kramer in Leeds and at the Polytechnic there. From 1985 was full-time painting co-ordinator at Leeds Metropolitan University’s department of fine art. In 1995 she was Laing Regional Exhibition 1st Prize Winner; its National Exhibition major prizewinner; and was a prizewinner, Harewood Award, at Harewood Landscape Open. Later solo exhibitions included Thackeray Gallery and Dean Clough Galleries, Halifax, both 1996, and Adam Gallery, London and Bath, 2001.
