Painter and teacher, born in Edinburgh. He studied drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art, 1960–5, in 1965 winning an Andrew Grant Travelling Scholarship to Spain. From 1968 he was a lecturer in printmaking at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen. A painter of still life and landscape, Bryce employed a rich, warm and luscious palette in the Scottish tradition. Elected RSW, 1976. He won many awards, including a Sir William Gillies Travelling Scholarship; Scottish Arts Council Award; and an RSW May Marshall Brown Award. Was elected RSA and showed often at RA and SSA. Had two solo shows at New 57 Gallery, Edinburgh in 1966 and 1968. Later showed at Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh; Yperifanos Gallery, New York; and Sue Rankin Gallery. Numerous public collections hold Bryce’s work, including Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Scottish Arts Council and National Trust for Scotland.
