Bird was born on 22nd March 1883 in Forest Hill, and by the time of the 1891 Census was living, aged eight, at Hurley Lodge in Lewisham. By the 1901 census, his father, a wealthy hop factor, had moved the family to The Manor House, West Wickham, Kent. From this address, between 1905 and 1909, Bird made several contributions to exhibitions at the Royal Academy. Between 1910 and 1913 he submitted works to the RA from 118, Cheyne Walk, in Chelsea, and from 1914 until 1927, was working from 2 Logan Studios, Logan Place, in Kensington.

Bird was still a single man by the time of the 1939 register. He died in Surrey in early 1948, aged 65.
