(b Florence, 25 Sept. 1728; d Lisbon, 7 Mar. 1815). Italian engraver, active mainly in England, where he settled in 1764 with the position of official engraver to George III. In 1768 he was a founder member of the Royal Academy (admitted as a painter; engravers were orginally not eligible). He engraved the works of many leading contemporary painters, such as Copley and Reynolds, but he was also celebrated for prints after the Old Masters. Much of his work was in the stipple engraving technique. His output was enormous and he had many assistants and pupils. In 1802 he moved to Lisbon to become director of the Academy.
