Printmaker, painter, draughtsman and teacher, born in Berlin, Germany, whose family emigrated to Spain in 1936, then London, where he eventually settled. In 1939 he was interned at Huyton and was a draughtsman in an aircraft factory, 1940–6, from 1947–50 studying at Central School of Arts and Crafts under Anthony Gross and Morris Kestelman. During following years he did many jobs, including printer and photographer. From 1960–5 Baer was a printer of artists’ lithographs at Curwen Press, serving an apprenticeship with Stanley Jones which Baer said taught him much. He printed his own etchings in Birgit Skiöld’s Print Workshop, 1967–75. Baer was lecturer in printmaking at Hammersmith School of Art, then at Chelsea, from 1970. His work ranged from large, dramatic black-and-white etchings to exuberant, Expressionistic landscapes, employing among other colours vibrant reds and brilliant blues.
