
Ljubomir Tito Stjepan Babic [commonly known as Ljubo Babic] was born in Jastrebarsko, Croatia-Slavonia, Austria-Hungary [now Croatia] on 14 June 1890. After receiving private art lessons from Menci Clement Crncic (1865-1930) and Bela Clos Sesija (1864-1931) he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich. Whilst in Munich he also attended a course in artistic anatomy at the Medical School and studied set design at the Künstlertheater. He completed his art education in Paris in 1913-14. In 1914 he returned to Croatia-Slavonia and in c.1916 took up a teaching post at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb becoming a full professor in 1940. He eventually retired from teaching in 1961. In addition to his career as an artist and academic, Babic was also an art critic.
